Game of Thrones: Season 8, Episode 2 Review (Spoilers)

Calm before the storm

Wow. That was pure fan service. This week, we were given an episode that was the prelude to the battle we have been promised for 8 years now. Something about waiting for the end, and these characters just reminiscing with each other is so satisfying.

Several groupings of characters split off into factions within Winterfell to resolve some things before they prepare for war. Tyrion it seems is at odds with Dany over his trust of Cersei, Sansa almost starts to trust Dany, and Jaime had pretty much everyone to contend with, although the ending from last week with Bran was dealt with fairly quickly.

The best scenes, were with the group just sitting by the fire, and drinking wine. Its nice to just have a break after all they have been through. Seeing Brienne be knighted by Jaime was a highlight, and everyone’s banter this time was perfect. Even just little moments like Arya having a drink with The Hound were really nice. Arya’s scene with Gendry was a little oddly paced, however.

Jon finally revealing his identity to Dany was good to get out of the way. I’m glad it wasn’t drug out, and it sets up interesting possibilities. Could Dany be turning into a Mad Queen?

Other highlights included Sam giving his family sword to Jorah for the battle, any scenes with Sansa, and Tyrion showing glimpses of his old self again. Overall, this was a fantastic episode to relax with, as next week, we will be dealing with an hour and 28 minute battle sequence.

Rating: 9/10
