Run, Cruise, Run
Mission: Impossible Fallout is a movie where you kind of know exactly what you are getting. This franchise is built on the greatest setpieces, and well executed action scripts. However, this movie is perhaps the best in the series, with the tone and stakes being the most serious yet. If Christopher Nolan directed a Mission film, it would probably be a lot like this.
Christopher McQuarrie returns from Rogue Nation to helm this, and he once again makes a really suspenseful film with a lot of Hitchcock tension throughout. He is one of the few action directors that understands that the audience wants to see what is happening, rather than having constant edits and shakey cam. He also understands that practical stunts, and fights are much more visceral and real than any CGI replacement. Any CGI in this film is barely noticeable because it is blended with reality. The finale of the film involving a helicopter chase is up there with the Burj Khalifa scene from Ghost Protocol as a franchise best.
Tom Cruise and the usual gang always deliver consistent and well done performances, but the real standout here is Henry Cavill. He is physically imposing, and can be really scary at times. He adds a real class to the film, and I never thought I would hear Superman ever say f**k.
The 3D presentation of the film really surprised me with how great it was. The shots and depth make you feel like you’re on a theme park ride in the best way possible. I loved the grittier tone to this movie, despite the script being pretty simple and straightforward. This is pure action and visual storytelling much like Mad Max Fury Road.
If you have been kind of bored of the last couple months of summer movies, you cannot miss this. Its a movie you need to see to believe, and a much needed win for Tom Cruise after 2017’s The Mummy. See it in the biggest, loudest theatre possible.
