2018 is looking to be another year of blockbuster franchises and well-known properties to grace the silver screen. We’ve already had a monster hit with Marvel Studios’ Black Panther raking in over $900 million worldwide, and that number is still climbing. I thought it would be fun to take a look at the biggest releases that are coming out from April to August which is generally the biggest time of the year for these type of movies. Let’s get started.
Release Date: April 13th, 2018
Dwayne “The Rock’ Johnson is definitely the biggest movie star in Hollywood right now. Ripe off the success of The Fate of the Furious and Jumanji last year, this video game adaptation could end up being another massive hit for the star. The film is a loose adaptation of the 80’s arcade classic, where giant monsters demolish buildings and eat innocent bystanders. The movie takes a different approach, with Johnson starring as a wildlife expert who cares for an albino gorilla. Through scientific hijinks, the gorilla ends up growing to “King Kong” size and other giant monsters join the fun. The cgi-heavy trailers promise action spectacle, but lets hope it has some charm to go along with it.
Avengers: Infinity War
Release Date: April 27th, 2018
This is it. The big one. The culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, started in 2008, with Iron Man. Directors Joe, and Anthony Russo have quite a lot on their plate with this one. However, my favourite films of the “MCU” are Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Civil War, which they both helmed. Thanos as the villain has a lot to live up to as well, being teased since 2012, and having read the excellent series such as The Infinity Gauntlet, and Thanos Rising, I have a certain expectation for the character. Marvel Studios better be prepared to go dark with him, and kill off a number of characters. April 27th can’t come soon enough.
Release Date: May 18th, 2018
The first Deadpool movie was Fox’s biggest hit based on a Marvel property. Audiences and critics both loved Ryan Reynolds’ redemption story after some comic book movie blunders. The sequel is introducing fan favourite characters such as Cable and Domino, with the return of Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. This is my most anticipated movie of the year, and I can only say that parents, please don’t bring your kids to this one.
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Release Date: May 25th, 2018
May is definitely the most crowded month. The new Star Wars spinoff film has famously had many production troubles. From the firing of the original directors, to the lead actors reportedly needing acting lessons, this hasn’t been an easy film to put together. Hopefully the results are more positive in this origin tale about everyone’s favourite smuggler. I honestly don’t see the need for this particular story, but I’m definitely excited to see Donald Glover as Lando, and what a Ron Howard Star Wars film looks like.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Release Date: June 7th, 2018
The first Jurassic World was a monster hit. Grossing over $1.5 billion at the box office, it is one of the most successful soft reboots. Personally, I thought the first movie was kind of a sad attempt at recreating what Spielberg did in the 90’s, with some fun action scenes. Director J.A. Bayona promises this film will be more in the vein of a horror movie, which sounds way more interesting to me. Throw in the return of Jeff Goldblum, and this could be a big improvement.
Release Date: June 15th, 2018
No family film this year will top my hype for this one. The Incredibles is my all time favourite animated movie, and one DVD that I wore down as a child. Brad Bird said he only would do this when he had a great story, which is why it took over 14 years to come to life. This film takes place right where the original left off, with the Parr family dealing with being well known superheroes. Brad Bird needs redemption from Tomorrowland, and this is the way to do it.
Ant Man and the Wasp
Release Date: July 6th, 2018
Another Marvel movie! The first Ant Man was a sleeper hit, and his appearance in Captain America: Civil War was a showstopper. The character of the Wasp makes an upgrade to front and center, with Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer playing her parents, the original Ant Man and Wasp. Peyton Reed delivered some amazing visuals with the original, and I expect no less here. How this ties into Infinity War should be interesting.
Mission Impossible: Fallout
Release Date: July 27th, 2018
Ah the infamous film that caused the digital moustache removal in Justice League. In all seriousness, this film is hot off the heels of Tom Cruise’s big flop of last year, The Mummy. His redemption is in his most famous series. Christopher McQuarrie returns from the excellent 5th film, and features new faces with Angela Bassett and Henry Cavill. The stunts look to be just as crazy, and this has become the premiere American spy series. What a way to end July.
Well, those are the biggest films coming this spring/summer! What are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments.
